Shipwreck

each day is a shipwreck

and those drowning

seek to drag us into

an ocean of misery

just as hard

as we try to pull them

onto our raft –

how this world

is designed

to be a battle

yet this conflict

is not between

demons and angles:

for the only war

is between us and ourselves

to not become cynical,

to not jump into the ocean

or leave other to drown

how the true victory

is instead to have the courage

to reach out my hand

even if we must fight

not to fall ourselves:

Oh, God!

how I pray for the strength

for the flame of my heart

never to be extinguished

in a world that rains

each and every day

for the greatest tragedy

Is the death of our hearts

before our bodies

how no mortal

has the strength

to stand in a raging river

without being swept of their feet

yet you give us the will

to swim up

even waterfalls
