On that Hike

On that hike,

I seldom looked

at my two feet

in favor of what

laid ten steps

ahead of me

On that hike

my journey

suddenly ended

at the summit

unheralded

and permanent

On that hike,

my shadow dawned

waned

and set

before I fully understood

who I was

or why I was here

On that hike,

even if

I had all of eternity

to ponder

these questions

it would be

inadequate

for I was

but an ant

and the world,

was the sea
